In the early 1900s after the Japanese Russian war, Saichi Sugimoto worked hard panning for gold, he was nicknamed Sugimoto the Immortal because of his death-defying actions in every battle.
He was a former soldier who sought his fortune to fulfill a promise made to his brother before he was killed in the war to support his family.
One day, a drunken friend tells Sugimoto the story of a man who was killed in Hokkaido. The only clue to the location is a coded map that he tattooed on his cellmate’s body in exchange for treasure.
Sugimoto doesn’t think about the story until he finds the corpse of a drunk man who has the same tattoo described in the story. But before he could put his mind at ease.
Suddenly a Grizzly bear that was the cause of the man’s death approached Sugimoto and intended to eat his food.
Then he was saved by a young Ainu girl named Asirpa, then the two agreed to look for karus treasure together.
